What’s Causing Your Back or Neck Pain

Upper back or neck pain is not uncommon, but it is not something you have to struggle with either. Most often, neck pain occurs as a result of some type of trauma to the upper shoulders and back, the neck itself, or the surrounding area. The upper portion of your spine, called the cervical spine, can become misaligned when there is trauma or force applied to it. This creates pinched nerves, inflamed muscles, and limited movement.

How does this happen? It can occur for a wide range of reasons. For example, auto accidents are a common cause. When involved in auto accidents, a person’s head can whip forward and backward quickly. To imagine what happens, consider a whip or lash being struck against a surface. The lash bounces forward and backward quickly, creating incredible force. That force causes the alignment concern. And, this is what we common call whiplash. Keep in mind it can occur for many reasons including from sports injuries or even a physical trauma or strike to the neck.

What Can Be Done about This Neck Pain?

When you visit your chiropractor, our team will provide a full examination and determine the best treatment plan for your neck pain. This will often include chiropractic adjustments. During a chiropractic adjustment, we apply gentle force to the cervical spinal column. We work to re-align the spinal column here. In doing so, we are able to create less nerve compression. This reduces your pain.

In addition, we may recommend massage therapy for neck pain. When whiplash occurs, the muscles and tendons in the area become inflamed. This inflammation causes the soreness you feel. Massage therapy helps to fix this problem. It helps to encourage more blood flow to the area, which in turn helps to speed up the body’s natural healing process. You feel better because your body heals faster.
