In both major and minor car accidents, the force of impact produces a whipping action of the neck resulting in damaged soft tissue structures. Abnormal joint function is common after whiplash experiencing whiplash trauma. It can result in a variety of disorders which could include:
- Chronic pain syndromes
- Disc degeneration
- Pinched nerves
- Muscle spasms
- Inflammation of the neck and/or back
- Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
Though you may not experience some of these issues immediately, they can often produce a domino effect leading to multiple neurological and musculoskeletal symptoms and complications years after the accident if they go unaddressed. It has been discovered that whiplash injuries are often responsible for early degeneration of the vertebrae throughout your spine as well as chronic pain.
If whiplash is confirmed after initial consultation, chiropractors can use a number of techniques to restore proper function to any of the affected areas. For example, adjustments could improve mobility in constricted joints.
In a study conducted by the Journal of Orthopedic Medicine, it was found by researchers that 74% of people treated with chiropractic care for whiplash showed improvement. their report claimed: “The results from this study provide further evidence that chiropractic is an effective treatment for chronic whiplash symptoms.”
Repetitive actions occurring over an extended period of time can often cause both lower back pain and neck pain. If there is a subluxation present, it makes an injury much more likely. A subluxation often causes swelling as a defense mechanism; however, it can lead to multiple problems and irritate nerves surrounding the area. Realignments in conjunction with physical therapy can help alleviate pain due to these causes.
